The Moly coating, of course...........

Seriously though, they're supposed to provide protection from piston slap on dry starts.

Moly is molybdenum, its a soft material and reduces friction and heat transfer. It can be worth a small amount of power and longevity if its done right, but it needs to be applied in a specific way and then cured. We used to use a moly based coating on the racecar's pistons, but how much difference it made I really can't say, it's not a huge difference except maybe over long time period where it may help longevity and reduce cylinder wear.

well, the reason im asking is cuz first of all im still learning a lot about engines in general. second i had my 98 cobra 4v built by modular mustang racing here in ventura, and they used manley pistons that have the moly coated skirts and i had never seen this before. so i just wanted to know what kind of benefits the moly coating would give me.

brutal metal, you and i share some of the same mods. i too have the JLT RAI, the manley pistons and H beam rods. i also have my block bored .020 over. did you ever run your set up without your KB? if so, how much of a power increase did you feel after the rebuild?

I don't have a KB, I'm presently still normally aspirated and it's looking like I'm gonna wait till fall to install the Vortech, it's already Hot as hell down here so I'm gonna do some suspension and fuel system stuff over the summer first! the present motor did 314/307.. which probably wasn't a huge increase over the stock internals, all I did was punch it out a bit, the heads, cams, valvetrain and intake are untouched stock.. I did this motor mainly as a foundation for a supercharger! (And a plug backed out and scored #7!)
I do have my knock sensors turned off in the custom tune, do you 2V guys have knocks too? They'll pull timing and rob some power if the engine vibrates too much or hits a bump in the road!

Nah, 2V's were blessed in that aspect. We don't have knock sensors.

Yeah what happens even on the dyno the knock sensors will pull timing for reasons not all at related to pinging or detonation, they trigger on ocasion from engine vibrations like I mentioned, it happens a lot at the upper rpms which does a number on peak HP! 99-01 Cobra guys get custom tunes when they hear about this!(my tuner set mine to activate if the coolant temp goes over 205 but for normal driving they won't come on!)

I've heard of instances where crazy stuff activates the knock sensors also. Exhaust leak sounds, piston slap will cause vibrations that set them off, Roots style superchargers, etc. I'm glad we don't have to deal with them.

Actuallly the engine will self sdjust the air/fuel ratio until the knock sensor picks up knocking than it will decrease iit a bit for optimization. It does this every quarter second or so. Also moly coated rings are great.but if anyone tries to sell you moly coated + anything else . Its a rip off. Just moly by itsself

Moly rings are great for normally aspirated or lower boost cars, when reaching upper teens to 20+lbs steel ring packs are the only true choice!
