96 Mustang GT w/Flowmaster sounds weak..help?

Hey guys

I'm new, this here will be my first post so go easy on me
I just purchased my 1st Mustang, the car came with a cold air intake and a cat back flowmaster exhaust.

Quick question...

How can I get it to sound better? ( as in louder )

The car sounds incredible at lower RPM...but the moment I start getting past 2.5 RPM it starts getting QUIET.

It makes no sense to me what-so-ever.

If someone could explain, that'd be awesome.

Like did the person that installed it do something wrong?

I wish I could provide more info but I just got the car 2 days ago and I really am new to this.

Any help would be great

Thanks

Flowmasters are weird like that. I notice that at some point when accelerating hard the exhaust stops getting louder and just gets faster, if that makes sense.

I feel that the reason has to do with either the chambered design of the mufflers (vs bullet style mufflers, like Borla Stingers) or the excessive amount of catalytic converters on our mustangs, assuming you still have the stock mid pipe in place.

Be grateful for those flow masters though. When I got my car it had Magnapacks on it. Talk about quiet and generic sound haha.

Ok so it's normal then?

Should I change out anything? Like that "H pipe" you mentioned.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I don't think anything is wrong. You can't really install exhaust wrong. The worst that could happen is there would be a exhaust leak from a poor fit or lazy install. In that case though your exhaust would make quite a racket and you would think it was loud, not quiet.

What I really like is the "X" pipe on these cars.

Our mustang came from the factory with H pipes, which is fine except they just sound a little different is all. Some people say the X flows better but I haven't noticed anything notable in my experiences with both setups.

Here are a few links to youtube. The first link in an X pipe, the second link is an H pipe. Both with Flowmaster mufflers

2004 Mustang GT UPR o/r x-pipe Flowmaster Super 44 Exhaust - YouTube

2001 Ford Mustang GT Flowmaster Super 44 and Pacesetter Offroad H Pipe - YouTube

As you can tell the X pipe is more exotic sounding, a little more race car. The H is more muscle car and defiantly has that "hollow" sounding note to it that a lot of people like. You really can't go wrong with either one.

Even though I prefer the X pipe, I have an H pipe in my garage that I swap out from time to time. The biggest thing you can do in terms of sound is just switch to a aftermarket mid pipe, preferably one that doesn't have cats if your state does not have emission laws.

Get an X-pipe (I prefer catted) and it will make it much louder! Good luck!

O/R x is the way I went. It makes it A LOT louder than what it would be with cats, but I'm not sure. But either way its loud and sounds amazing! I have the o/r x pipe, and flowmaster 40's

I saw your signature, how does your car sound with your exhaust dumped at the axle? I've also thought about this, but worried the drone and fumes would be terrible.

The drone is pretty bad under 1700rpms under load, anything over that sounds good. Fumes? I smell nothing of the sort...

Being a DD the drone can get annoying at times, but I think it sounds good and I like it

Welcome to the site!! The combo of cats and the Flowmasters are making it sound that way.Agree with above=X-pipe is the way to go,and maybe some straight through design mufflers.

Cherish those around you,for at the blink
of an eye, they can be gone.

I have the SLP and I like it however i don't like the fact that they want you to remove the driver side studs in the manifold...that's a job and a half! I did not remove mine and I had to get creative

I would not go with Pypes, they tend to have fitment issues.

UPR makes a good one, bassani makes a good one, manga flow makes a good one. Out of those three you can't go wrong. This is my opinion and you will get several on here so choose one based on your needs/budget.

Don't know what you are talking about, I have Magnapacks with the Magnaflow catted X, and it's plenty loud especially now with my TFS heads, cams, and Kenne Bell. It doesn't have that obnoxious "I can wake everybody up in an 100 mile radius" tone.
