Internal Tr-3650 swap

Okay, my tr-3650 out of a '03 mach 1 is shot. (Grinds in second and third and knocks in nuetral).
In order to save money, i bought a 2010 mustang gt Tr-3650 and i want to swap internal parts...
Im worried about how hard it will be to do this personally.
1) is it possible to just swap parts??
2) Internal parts are what im concerned with. Im gonna keep my cable clutch.
3) is their a instruction book i can follow??
4) maybe someone here has done it before and could give me advice on the whole process

Most internals will swap, but there are certain "rules" to follow.

These items do NOT SWAP:
Input shaft
Main shaft
None of the forks, or fork linkage
None of the three main case parts.

Your fifth gears will need to stay as pairs:
A 2002-2004 has the 0.62 ratio and a 2005-2010 has the 0.68
A 2001 TR3650 has the 0.68 fifth gear as well...
Pick the ratio you want.

The gear sets are all the same tooth count and ratios but they changed the angle of the teeth on SOME of the gears in about 2004. If you look closely at the counter shaft of an 01-03 where first and reverse mesh with the counter shaft there is no step between the two areas. On the 2004-2010 version there is a small step between the two gear heights.

The gears that are different between these two sets are:
Counter shaft
First Gear
Reverse main shaft gear
Reverse idler gear

These four items must be all from the same style gear set. You can see that the tips of the gear teeth are flat where they were pointed before and are pointed where they were flat before.

The bearings and races are all the same except the 2005-2010 has a tail flange bearing and the 2001-2004 has a tail yoke bushing.

You will need to tear the main shaft down completely, as the shafts themselves are not the same. This takes a press and some pullers.

Is it possible for me to swap just the bell housing and tail shaft with my shifter????

The front case can swap and will function as long as you keep the input shafts matched to the front housings. The newer housing is deeper and the input shaft is longer.

Of course, the newer type is a hydraulic setup...


The rear housing would bolt up, but will never work right because the internal shift forks are different, the tail shafts are different, as are all of the internal shift linkage components. The three shift rails are not even in the same ORDER!

All three housings are different between 2004 and 2005. There is very little difference in the main case. The 2005+ has the reverse lockout mechanism mounted in the main case and the 2004- models have that mechanism located in the tail housing.

So, above, I laid out what is compatible and that is most gears, the bearings and synchros...
