$30 chips on ebay...good deal or good joke?

I'm brand new to the vast world of Mustangs and upgrading. I have an awesome 99 GT L.E. with a great aftermarket exhaust from headers to tips. I'm looking for bolt on accessories right now like cold air induction, throttle body, plugs/wires, and a chip. So I was looking on ebay for parts, however I recently was taken for $400 on ebay so wasn't excited about resorting to shopping there again. The one thing I noticed were the chips. They promise to give more horsepower, torque, and help regulate fuel for better economy.

And the price...$50 or less!!! Brand new with warranty!!!

As you all know about $150 less than retail.
Too good to be true? Let me know your thoughts.
Worst case senario...plug it in and the car fry's, right? :hihi:

Stay away from these so called chips!!!!!! They are crap, and actually harms your engine over time. There are a million threads about them in these forums. If you read on, they can range anywhere from 9.95 to 50 bucks on Ebay. They are all the same.....

i didnt even read your post, i read chip/ebay/$30. Dont buy that crap lol.

I would get a hand held tuner... sct or predator, predator is more common, but check your local tuners.

I would spend money on bolt ons for now.

Learn from my experience

DONT BUY IT.... It will harm your engine... First of all, all it is a resistor... you could buy one at Radio Shack.... All that it does is make the car "Think" the air coming into the engine is cooler... But since it really is not, It will hurt your engine....WHAT EVER YOU DO DONT INSTALL THIS!!!!! If you look at this "chip" all it is a resistor... no computer... the Box is just made to think its something more... If you want to get something... then buy a Flash Tuner or a real chip... from like Superchips... or Diabo Sport.... They have real Fuel maps... so they wont hurt your engine.... Plus you will be able to change alot of things like top speed... Gear Ratios... EXC...

Wow! Thanks!

I appreciate all of the feed back! My only other concern is that ebay sells all this accessory and performance stuff so cheap...when do I know when I'm getting a deal? Carbon fiber mirrors with power and blinkers...not to mention really cool looking...for 25 bucks, air intakes for 25 bucks, and body kits for less than 200 bucks. I know there are big deals out there but it's so hard not to be drawn to ebay deals...I blame the media!

Thanks again everybody.
Thomas

Take his advice. These chips are a joke.

If you want to feel a difference in your car, get gears or a power adder. Best bang for your buck...

Ebay is a great thing sometimes, and really bad for tuners.. stick to the products you know - if you have any questions about a product ask us or someone else is a forum...

Just remember: if the price is too good to be true, it probably is.

You can get decent used or new equipment on Ebay. For instance, I got a used Diablo Predator handheld tuner for $275 and a new K&N FIPK for $75. (A new Diablo should be $350-400, and a retail price K&N FIPK is $125) Notice the prices are "reasonable" but not "too good to be true". No one gives stuff away. If you find a decent price, and the seller looks reputable (check the feedback!), you have a good chance of a happy transaction.
One other note: ALWAYS use Paypal. Never send cash or a check. That way you have some amount of recourse if things go bad.
