2001 Mustang GT is my flywheel 6 or 8 bolt?

I was reading my "trusty" High Performance Mustang book by sean hyland and it suggested upgrading to the cobra flywheel and 11" clutch as apposed to aftermarket stuff. The cobra fly wheel is 8 bolt and weighs 11lbs or so. The 2v flywheel weighs a much heavier 22lbs. I was just wondering if there was a way to make sure I have an 8 bolt crank before I start the process.

Thanks in advance,

braupe

better question for you...

do you have a t-45 transmission or a tr3650?
t-45 ('96 - mid '01) = 8 bolt
tr3650 (mid '01 - '04= 6 bolt

here, check this:

"* The Mustang GT in 2001 had both the T5/T-45 and 3650 Transmissions. Check your driver's door for a sticker and look under "TR" for a "K". If you have a "K" then you have the 3650 Transmission. If not order the T5/T-45."

If the sticker is missing, pm me the VIN number and I can dig out the data.

Another way requires getting the car up on a lift and marking one bolt, then eyeballing them as they go by and counting.

MUCH easier if you have the sticker!

sure done did means you got the 8 bolt. you can just buy the 03/04 cobra flywheel (aluminum) or an aftermarket one (i recomend fidanza) and get a clutch for an 03/04 cobra as well.

(fidanza flywheel has a removable friction plate which you can remove and replace, has the same effect as resurfacing a stock steel flywheel and costs about $40-$50 for the new friction plate. the 03/04 cobra flywheel, on the other hand, cant be resurfaced and the friction plate on it isnt removable, so whenever you need to resurface it, you would need to buy a new one)

only if you buy the one for the 11" clutch, as i believe they make them for both the 10.5" and 11" clutch.

The 03/04 cobra clutch setup is decent, and especially for the price, however the fact that it's better than aftermarket is entirely false. A McLeod dual friction clutch setup is one of the best out there.

The description from that site has me all confused. I have an (X) as the 8th character in my vin, but on my door sticker I have a (K). So wouldn't that mean that I have a Windsor built tr3650 6 bolt tranny? Maybe I'm just reading it wrong, but it makes no sense to me?

'03 GT, tri ax, o/r UPR x pipe, BBK cai, BBK u/d pulleys, spec clutch, mach 1 grille delete, mach 1 chin spoiler, and a Fidanza billet aluminum flywheel.

well not quite, Windsor only refers to the engine, not the transmission. "windsor" means it was built at the ford Windsor plant, windsor is not an actual company. tremec is the company that supplies the t-45 and the tr3650.

now, according to the information,

the (X) = windsor plant
and the "K" on the door sticker means you have the tr-3650.

BUT

from my experiences, "X" usually means Romero and "W" usually means Windsor.

if the car you are talking about is the one in your sig, you have a 6 bolt flywheel (Romero Built engine) and a tr-3650.

OK so I have a 2001 GT with a Windsor engine with the T-45 transmission and am confused with the whole windsor romero engine thing. If I want to buy a used engine out of a totaled gt, do I need to make sure that it is the same (windsor) as what I have now or can I replace it with a Romero engine. Will this fit up to my transmission or will I need to buy new parts.
