Radio volume low, Cassette fine

I've got an old JVC cassette player in my 67 Mustang and its been like this for many years, but its finally getting on my nerves. When I've got it on AM/FM, I turn the knob all the way and you can barely hear it with the engine off. But I put a cassette in and it works fine at normal volume levels. What could be the issue? It used to work until I hit a bump in the road, then I could move the antenna cable around and get the sound back. Now that trick doesn't work and I've checked the antenna & re-routed the power directly to the fuse block. Still nothing! Speakers are about 20 year old Kenwoods, they're dry rotted but one still sounds decent so I'm keeping them. I can deal with busted speakers.
