Subwoofer help

Hi all! I just recently purchased a '67 coupe, and I am about to install a new sound system. I am putting 6.5" in the front and 6x9" on the rear deck. But I want to install a subwoofer, but I don't want to have one of those large sub boxes in my trunk. I was thinking of mounting the sub speaker on the rear deck and I am wondering if anyone knew of this would work or would I be better getting a subwoofer box and installing it in the trunk? Also doe the size matter? is 12" or 10" better than 8"?

Thanks for all your help and suggestions!

Size does matter, different size will give you different bass. I have one 12 in a single box I made and it sounds great not to much not to little. It would look better if you install it in the trunck and not the rear deck. If you install it in the deck you won't get a real nice bass out of it because each speaker has specs on the amount of air space it needs to give you a solid bass.

What brandygt said. If you mount a sub on the deck, all it's going to do is vibrate the interior so bad, you would be able to hear it vibrate for blocks.

Just out of curiosity, where are you mounting the 6.5" speakers? I am looking to do the system in my 68 and I have the cutouts for the 6x9's on the rear deck. Also, what kind of stereo deck did you get?

I wouldn't mount it to the deck, it will vibrate. If you dont want a huge box taking up all your trunk space....then go for a bass bazooka...12 in...with built in amp....

I would definitely sacrifice a little trunk space. Buy one of the new thin subwoofers. Pretty much everyone makes them now (Rockford, JL, Pioneer, Kicker etc.). Unless you listen to a lot of rap or metal, I would go with a 10". You'll get a good amount out output and have a smaller box than a 12". I wouldn't waste my time with a bazooka tube, I've never really been impressed with those at all. The thin line woofers would probably be smaller anyway. JL is always more expensive, but the one here will give you an idea on the size.JL Audio: TW5 Subwoofers

Yes, I've tried installing my subs in the rear deck because I got great pairs of subs that needs to be exposed but then the sound aren't that good. Sometimes, you can't understand the music. You can have subs that can be installed in the trunk and not eating lot of your space. Just be good in choosing the right subs.

Thanks to everyone for your advice....I decided to go with a sub in the trunk.

I went with an Alpine CDE-9874 deck, Alpine Type-E 10" Single Voice Coil 4 Ohm Sub with an Alpine MRP-M500 500w Amp, Infinity REF9622i 6x9 speakers for the rear deck, and Inifinity REF6020CS 6.5s for the front kick panels...

hey, that set up should sound nice... however i would recomend some speaker baffles for your 6x9 speakers. the reason is that the sound waves and air pressure created by the subwoffer in your trunk will cause distortion in the rear speakers because the back of the speaker cones shares the same "air space" as the cone of your sub. also as an added benifit of the baffles is that you will have a better more crisp mid bass responce here is a link for some good but cheep and easy to install ones....
