Replacing factory Speakers

Ok, so I just purchased a '98 Convertible V6 and are replacing the stock head unity with a new Kenwood CD player with HD Radio. I also am looking at replacing my factory speakers. Are there any suggestions?

Looking for good sound, some bass (but not thumping). I want loud and clear as I am going to have the top down!

I did look at and can't decide on 5 1/4, 5x7, 6 3/4, or 6x8 ... Some insight would be much appreciated.

Also, would it be better to hook and amp to these speakers or use head unit as is?

Pick the highest rated speakers that will fit in the factory spots. Keep in mind that crucified offers wonderful customer support, but their prices are high to make up for it. Whether or not you need an amp depends on the output of your head unit... not enough info there to tell.
