1996 mach460 questions

i have a 96 cobra with a mach460 system and i was just curious if it was normal compared to other systems of the same year. It basically has ZERO bass to it. i mean a friend of mine with a stock 2003 v6 stang's bass beats way harder than mine. And anytime i try to turn the bass up slightly the front speakers start to sound distorted horribly. i do have two 12 inch subs and an amp but i recently had to remove them from my trunk to prepare for a car show and i was reminded of what no bass sounds like.
Also does anyone have any good suggestions on a box i could get built? My cobra's a convertible so i cant pull the back seats down to slide a normal sized box in. all ive got is 2 crappy walmart sub boxes. Any help would be greatly appreciated
