What I did on mine when installing new speakers, was cut off the factory connector. I slid some heat shrink up the wire then soldered the new connectors to the existing wires and slid the heat shrink down over the connection and heat it with a blow dryer to seal it up. quick and easy and a clean looking install.

+1 on that. thats exactly what I did, then I added some electrical tape at the ends of the heat shrink for double protection.

If you're serious about changing your audio, send me a personal message and I can send you a list of what I did. In my opinion, the stock radio in the base models wasn't suitable for AM radio. It sounds ridiculous now, though... I find myself listening to more AM radio as I age! haha
