2006 v6 stock radio (not shaker) question

So I replaced the stock radio in my car and when I was pulling out the factory radio I noticed there were 3 total connections going to the head unit. I know one was the antenna, the other was the actual wiring harness that went to the speakers, but the one in the middle, what is it? What is it for and why doesn't it get used when the radio is replaced with an aftermarket unit?
