Question 1969 Mach 1 Tune Up. What do I need to do?

I just purchased a 69 mach 1. Going to take it to get all fluids replaced, Check front end and brakes. I am also going to get it tuned up. I assume it has the points etc in the old distributor. My friend told me I can get an updated distributor without points that creates a hotter spark and makes the car run better. Is this true ? What specifically do I ask for at the auto parts store. Is it a plug and play where you replace this modern distributor with the old one and just connect the spark plug wires ?
please advise. Will my certified mechanic know what I am talking about.
