Radio Wiring Questions

We have a 98 V6, it had the original two piece unit with cassette and CD player. I removed that and put in a Kenwood unit. Currently the new radio will not work but my concern is that now, neither does the speedo and when I hit the power door look switch it will lock but not unlock and it causes the dash lights to come on for a second. My biggest question, I did not use the factory harness to hook up my new radio, is the original harness for the radio tied into anything else? By not reusing it did I short something out.
There was what appears to be some heavy duty ground connections on the factory pieces. I did not reuse these and I was wondering if they where grounding something else?
Thanks,
Charlie

I think you should check the fuse box first.
