Hvac controls with new headunit

Good evening all, I'm looking at getting a new head unit for my '14 base v6 mustang. I thought I had one picked out until all the extras appeared. Namely the dash kit with the new hvac controls. What's the purpose of having to get new hvac controls? Is there no room behind the stock radio that they had to move it?
I am looking for anyone else's experience with the aftermarket dash kits. Are the new controls for hvac reliable? I hate the fact that I can't remove the factory radio without needing new hvac controls.

Sadly the new mustangs have a 1 piece dash why you need a new dash kit and they're usually real pricey i haven't seen any done without having to replace the entire dash kit with a new kit. I think they run around 100? but some manufactures do make some really nice ones though that look like stock. Alpines new line up suppose to integrate with new cars not sure if they make it for mustangs yet but i know they did do some for suvs. I would call sonic or crutchfield super friendly and helpful people.
