2012 Premium model door speakers

Have a 2012 V6 convertible premium with shaker 500 stereo. Want to replace both door and rear side panel 5 x 7 speakers. So far I just ordered the Polk 5 x 7s for front door. Just wondering, I have some leftover soundmat. Where can I put it on the door? Will it help if I put on the inside of the outer door panel. (Hard to describe, but the inside of the outer "skin" or painted part of the door).. Or do I put in on top of the plastic water barrier?

Ford has a strip on the outer door skin but a little more above the OEM piece will help...just tap on any large expanses of flat steel with a knuckle and place it anywhere it seems to "gong". You can also peel back the water shield, pull off the speaker mount and install around there then put the speaker mount back on...

Excellent idea, and thanks for the pic. This will be so much easier than doing the whole door, like I figured everyone would say. Thanks again, cant wait to try it. Might as well ask if anyone who has a convert, has done the back side panels?
