New Water Pump Need Sealant?

Installing a new water pump in 66 Pony with a 302. Water pump has a backing plate and 2 gaskets. Is sealant needed around either or both the water pump/backing plate gasket and the backing plate/timing cover gasket? I'm certain sealant is needed around the two water jackets on the backing plate/timing cover gasket. What sealant is recommended? Thanks.

I like either Black or Ultra-Black Silicone. In a perfect situation, where every mating surface was new and untouched. the gaskets by themselves would seal just fine, The sealant just helps guarantee success with the non-perfect components we typically are dealing with here in the real world.

I use blue RTV as it matches the engine color on my V8. It's easier to add sealant than to remove the pump, buy new gaskets and hope for the best.

Thanks everyone. I'll go with better safe than sorry and put a light coat of sealant on the water pump/backing plate gasket and also the 2 water ports on the timing cover/backing plate gasket. Once the pump is on then installing CVF Racing Stealth Black water pump, crankshaft, and alternator pulleys. Thanks again.
