Newly rebuilt steering box really an improvement in the mach 1. Should have taken care of issues but still have a lingering problem. While tracks well and turns smoothly and easily, the steering wheel doesn't return as it should. It's like having power steering with a manual return. Trying to figure out if it's the power steering control valve or the power steering ram at fault (both have been replaced with rebuilt units). Is there a way to figure out which is at fault ? Any help greatly appreciated.
Opus, the issue you're having can best be resolved by adding more caster. Chances are, whoever did your alignment may have used the original bias-ply tire specs, and they really didn't need much caster if any. Radials do. With power steering, you really need 5 or so degrees if you can get it. It will greatly improve your RTC, give you more high-speed stability, and even add a little camber during cornering, which helps keep your tires planted square on the pavement during a turn.
Too much caster will make it hard for you to turn the wheels, though with your power steering this is less of an issue. "too much" is not likely to be a problem for you. If you have not yet done the Shelby/Arning drop for your upper control arm, this might be the time. It will reduce body roll and understeer while adding caster - one of the best cheap mods you can do to an early Mustang or Cougar.
I'll bet this isn't a hardware issue at all - just a bit of adjustment needed!
Thank you, makes a lot of sense. Looked it up and will purchase kit. Hard to believe you can purchase any part for less than a $100.
