Symptoms of a worn out distributor cap? 1968 Mustang 302

so ive been having problems with surging and the car dying out and stalling. So i went ahead and checked the distributor cap and this is what i saw, there was carbon residue and the plastic around the electrodes was melted. I was wondering if this could be the cause for the surging and dying out? My mustang has a 302 with a four barrel street avenger 570 cfm carb.

From your pictures that doesent look bad enough to be causing the type of problems you describe.
If you are not sure, replace it, then you will have eliminated it as a posibility.
