If there was ever any doubt regarding how committed Ford is to giving its new full-electric crossover the full “Mustang” treatment, wait until you hear this: Ford has confirmed that a Shelby-badged variant of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E is coming, and it will be engineered with race track driving in mind.

Ford Performance Chief Program Engineer Ed Krenz confirmed the vehicle to UK-based outlet evo, saying he is “looking forward to the challenge of applying the Shelby characteristics to an electric car. The trick for us is the fun-to-drive part, and sustainability in terms of charging.

“It needs to be capable to go all day on a trackday – you can’t do 20 minutes and then have to charge it all night.”

The future Shelby Mustang Mach-E will sit above the Mach-E GT in the lineup, besting that vehicle’s targeted sub-4-second 0-to-60 acceleration time. We imagine that, like the GT, the Shelby variant of the Ford Mustang Mach-E will employ all-wheel drive; other, lesser trim levels come standard with a rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Ensuring that the Shelby Mustang Mach-E will be able to handle a day of fun at a road course will certainly pose a challenge. Ford is targeting a driving range of 250 miles on a full battery charge for the Mach-E GT, but that assumes relatively easy take-off and acceleration, with plenty of cruising at normal, street-legal speeds. Road course driving, with its constant hard acceleration and hard braking, consumes much more energy.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E will go on sale toward the end of 2020, although evo expects we’ll have to wait until at least 2021 before a Shelby variant launches, probably with a price tag around £65,000 – about $84,000 U.S.

Just when you think misappropriation of the Mustang can't get any worse Ford now describes a Shelby badged 4-door Mach E.

What is Ford doing, competing with the 4-door Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

Slap me. Wake me up. Tell me this is a joke and Ford hasn't gone off the deep end.

"We had the bad idea of creating a Mach 1 electric SUV idea, and it flopped, so we doubled down, and changed the name! We, the heads of the Ford Motor Company don't believe everyone that's saying this thing's not a Mustang, and they're mad about it. So, we're ignoring that fact, and tripling down! WOOOO! Bring on the Shelby Not-A-Mustang! YEAH!"

What's next? They decide to make a giant full-size electric SUV to replace the Expedition, and call it the new Escort?

It's just hard to believe that they put no value in the name "Mustang" after it's carried their company for so many years.

Let's see...new new executive team with the new CEP invested more $ in R&D than GM ...and has yet to show anything for it except these bubble-head ideas that everyone is just laughing at them......and let's not forget that new "customer input create team" to ID what their customers want! Thy are now the laughing stock of the auto industry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you go to the S550 general discussion forum we have a Ford Salesman that has made themselves available, I believe in a private capacity, to answer questions about what he knows of the Mach E having attended a dealership level briefing on the vehicle.

He has been responsive and open minded to our questions. Might head over there and read up and get some questions answered.

I admit I am very critical of Ford hijacking the Mustangs good name and slapping it on a electric 4-door, but placing that aside I'm keeping my head up and feel fortunate that someone who works in Ford Sales has stepped forward to answer questions.

He is a member of the forums so lets give him the courtesy he deserves.

Carroll Shelby is probably rolling about 7500rpm in his grave right now.

This entire debacle is blasphemy.

Can't see why you would say that considering what has carried the Shelby name before. All the vehicles below are more Shelby than the Mustangs that have carried the Shelby name, they actually came with a title that said they were manufactured by Shelby American.
