GT500 - Auto Trans Option?

How many would be interested in a GT500 if an Automatic transmission was an option?

This appears to be about the only thing Ford has not offered that both GM and Chrysler have, an automatic option with the supercharged ZL1 and Hellcat.

Heck, I don't even want a GT500, I just want a factory supercharged option with an automatic, perfect weekend drag racer.

I think it'd be a great idea. An auto GT500 base car. Only the essentials with delete options for the guys that want to save as much weight as possible at the expense of some creature comforts. Like a poor mans Cobra Jet

It would be a terrible idea. They were smart when they offered a proper manual only. The GT should be the same lol.

I don't think any cobra is an auto. I'm shocked that the zl1 corvette can be made with an auto considering the z06 is only manual.

I have a 2014 Roush mustang it is an automatic with 575 hp and 505 ft lbs torque.was told by all the automatic transmission can handle up to 700 hp before failure worries. I'm going to go from stage 3 phase 1 to stage 3 phase 3 which will increase the hp from 575 hp to 675 hp the torque from 505 ft lbs to 575 ft lbs. This is going to be a next year item I hope!

What is it about the sound of a powerful motor screaming to life, jumping to the passing gear, and going. Or the feel of a car laying a parking lot signature that makes men smile and their hearts pound?

As far as performance auto is the way to go. There is a reason why top dragsters are auto

1. There's no GT500 anymore.

2. Automatics are for posers.

3. Mustangs, especially the new one, are sports cars. That means they're for doing a lot more than just going in a straight line.

Slightly narrow minded view, me thinks.

Seriously though, are you guys implying that if anyone wants the torque and power of a V8 behind an automatic, ever, that all those people should buy trucks?

The whole point of a GT car is that it can be used in any number of ways.

Grand tourer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

To restrict a normal Mustang GT to a manual tranmission only, you turn a GT car into a sports car. The Mustang has always, since day 1, had an automatic option with a V8. The majority of automative sales are automatics, and in this day in age, any mass produced vehicle without an automatic option equals lost sales... FACT...

Since Ford usually produced an approx 5,000 Shelby GT500's each year, it's totally feasible that all those can be manual only, as Ford will not have to worry about selling them.

But to have a GT500 model with an Automatic, would bring huge praises by drag racers or people simply wanting a high horsepower daily driver with the hassle of an automatic.

I cannot imagine why would have such a narrow view. While manuals have their place and target demographic, it is ecstasy to just nail it at a light and go to 60+ mph without so much of a wiggle, no acceleration loss, no tire spinning, just pure go.

My 2011 GT was my last manual car, nothing but auto's now. I'm also 100% convinced that Ford will never put a strong enough manual transmission in a GT version, ever.

superchargers love automatics, no loss off boost when you shift

Bet turbos love automatics as well, and with the paddle shifters, you get the best of both worlds

2 years ago I really wanted a Shelby. But wanted an automatic more so I ordered a Brembo GT auto instead. Great car. I might have to trade it in if they make a Shelby auto in '15 or '16.

I previously owned an auto GT so I am coming from experience. They cant keep up on the canyons without feeling like your going to kill it. Also had to rebuild mine because of a failure. Will NEVER own another auto Mustang again. All the flack that people give for driving an auto is for a reason. Yeah they are good for drag racing for sure but there's nothing like down shifting and rev matching yourself.

Ever since I saw a 14 GT auto run 11s run after run with a cai, tune, drag radials and splice in xpipe I was sold. My 2015 will have an auto and a pd blower. 700 fwhp that even my girl can drive. If Ford wants the next Gt500 to run with the Hellcat they better match its outstanding 8 speed auto. I'll bet the manual Hellcat runs slower than the auto version and even with the GT500.

Don't they they use air-shifted automatics that are tuned to shift at a specific RPM? The reason is for more consistency. Drag racing automatics are also built to reduce parsitic power loss through the drive train. Finally, aren't most drag racers using 2-seed transmissions?

I personally don't see why Ford would not offer the GT500 with an automatic, except for the possible reason being that it would significantly reduce HP at the rear wheels.
