Performance chip issues?

So about a year ago I had a bama chip put into my 02 v6 mustang. Car ran fine on my way to the place to have the chip put in. After the installation, the car ran like crap...then boom, the engine began to knock! A year later I'm finally able to put another engine in it. The car runs great now but the chip is still in it with the switch set back to stock. My buddy told me that the intake gasket caused the other engine to fail. Could it just be a coincidence that the gasket failed that day or could the chip have had something to do with it? I'm scared that if I decide to use a tune that it might destroy the engine again.

Hi 4.6!

Really sorry to hear about your troubles, but unfortunately not unusual...and let me explain...…..

IMHO, going with a mail order tuneis really no different than your grandparents taking their car to"Tune-Masters" for a tune-up......yes, they did change the plugs etc,but they were not there to fine tune the car just find the middle of the roadwhere the car runs and get it out of the shop. Mail order tuners are nodifferent...anyone who claims they can tune your car without everseeing it (including virtually) is selling camel poop- period! They cannot tune yourengine without seeing the data specific to altitude, humidity & fuelburning characteristics- just because you use 93 octane does not mean the 93octane they used on their dyno (tuners) has the same burningcharacteristics...nor do they typically address the seasonal fuel blends foreach region of the US.

I have a friendwith a GT 5.0 w/factory blower....with the aftermarket tune, blew the pistonsthrough the pan (2 years ago)........and he is eating the engine......Ford wanted $10k toreplace.....he called me for advise, we have it down to about $4k for repairswith him doing much of the labor.

Perhaps what is equally importantis the parameters that can be adjusted are set by the OEM vehicle software…sothere is really no “magic” in what they are doing anyway. If you go to this linkhttp://www.fordracingparts.com/downl...ceTechTips.pdf the engineers at Fordracing have a article on just exactly how these “tuners” play games with the hp/tqratings, how calibration can cause misleading dyno results, & some of the“tricks” that are used to gain supposed power increases when in fact,mis-managing your engine.....and the most important item is……these "mailorder tuners' are not regulated like any other auto repair shop in the US...soif they "damage" your car...gee, sorry...sue me!

It is important to verify the“Tuner” is ASE certified in ECM& Trans programming & current. Plenty ofpersons advertise their programs to be the best & offer custom tunes, butvery few have credentials in these areas. Some of these “geniuses” have causeddamage to a few vehicles- just jump over to flatratetech.com & readcomments from the MSE techs!

Here's a few of my more "favorite comments".... just showing how untrained, unskilled and unqualified to many are even at the name-brand places to go!

“Running Bama's 91tune (w/BBK CAI) for the last month and have had issues starting……when turn theignition my car would click and the power intermittently cuts in/out, but wouldeventually start. I usually keep my odometer on the trip odometer, but wheneverI start it reverts back to the total mileage odometer…..my fuel gauge wasacting a little erratic, so I decided to revert back to stock and tryre-uploading the 91R tune. After reverting back to stock, I couldn't get it tostart.”

Thanks for the replies guys. It's a hard lesson learned, but I think I'd rather leave the chip alone than to keep spending thousands on replacing engines haha. I'm just happy to have the mustang back on the road!
