Question 01 3.8L timing cover seal?

I have a 3.8L 01 mustang with 145k miles & the front timing cover crankshaft seal is leaking.

I got a Timken 2692 seal from autozone, but it appears to have lip that seats on the front of the timing cover. The seal that is in the car now does not have this lip and is original (1 owner car). Most of the article i have read show this seal getting pressed in using a special tool. I have also had people tell me i need to pull the timing cover to change this seal. The Timken sited cross references this to the correct Ford part number 4F2Z6700AA and the national part 712692 that Advanced auto list for this car which does not appear to have the front lip.

Can anyone tell me which seal i really need? If i can install this w/o taking the cover off do i need the special seal installer tool?
