1998 V6 Mustang-Question about axle shaft

How can I tell if I broke an axle shaft. I took my brother's 1998 3.8L Mustang to work last night (like 8 hours ago) and I just got home. Well, backing in my drive, it got on some ice, slipped, and then it stopped spinning the wheel. It will still go forward with no problem, but the driver rear wheel won't spin when it's in reverse. The car does not have posi-traction (although it may be getting it now). So did I break an axle. Please tell me I didn't.

And if I did and I am buying a new axle, will the entire rear axle assembly from a 2000 GT fit? There is one near my house for sale that was pulled from a car in a front end wreck that I can afford.

1966 Mustang Sprint 200 "Oliver"... factory fog lamps, factory rally pac, off the road for restoration.

2005 Mustang 4.0 litre... Airaid CAI, Honeycomb taillamp panel, more mods to follow.

1- i don't think you broke an axle or anything , i believe its very normal

2- the entire rear axle assembly from a 2000 GT will fit directly with no problem

Not sure how I missed this, but anyway. The GT rear end will be wider 1 5/8 than your stock SN axle, but everything will fit accordingly. You cannot swap axles, but you can use the complete assembly. If you are not going for big power, just keep your stock 7.5 and add a t-lock. It will be cheaper in the long run. There is a write-up on how to install a t-lock at the top of the tech page......

Well, I'm in a better mood (sort of). We waited for the ice to melt and the axle shaft isn't broken. So that's one Mustang problem off my mind. Now I can focus on the fact that I may have fried my Pertronix trying to install a Rally Pac in the '66.
