2001 3.8L Mustang Engine Noise Normal?

We have a low mile mustang that sounds like a tractor when it first starts up in the morning. It is just loud a heck. Is that normal for these engines? I am trying to determine if I have an exhaust/manifold leak or if that is just simply the way they sound.

The only other issue that we are having is a rotten egg smell at start. I assume the converter is toast after this many years. Oxygen sensor???

Thanks for the help and advice in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to AFM! It shouldn't be any louder on startup than any other time... have you visually inspected the cats to see how they look? Any marble rattling type sounds at all? Look under the car when someone starts it and see if you see any exhaust leaks or anything.
Let us know!

definitely sounds like an exhaust leak before the catalytic converter.. as it warms up it probably closes the leak somewhat converter's probably not toast.. it takes time to warm up and actually filter the exhaust gases

There is also a ticking noise that gets quieter with time. Do the valves need adjusted on this engine? Any other potential cause? I will do some checking on the exhaust noise ............ Thank for the help. My daughter appreciates it.

a ticking is often also caused by an exhaust leak its like a short hiss but its so quick that it sounds like a tick.. as it heats up the crack will often close up.. btw its most likely on your passenger side header the AC has a drip line that happens to be right above the header.. it drips on there and often cracks it
