Question 03 V6 Mustang Tranny

Hi all, I recently purchased a 2003 V6 Mustang w/ standard 5-spd manual tranny. After a couple of hundred miles I noticed it would sometimes grind when changing into 5th at higher speeds and 3rd was getting notchy. The dealership changed the 3rd and 5th synchro's and problem solved.
BUT..... now I noticed that when changing from neutral to reverse it will grind unless I change into another gear first. The car has just under 23K on it.
Is reverse gear not synchronized in this transmission ? I was surprised as I have driven dozens of other manual cars and never had this problem. Thanks.

sounds like a bent "draws a blank" shaft. I had the problem on an old car, Can't remember the exact part (it was 20 years ago).

it's synchronized, but there's something wrong with the angle at which it's driving the tranny.

it should still be under warranty, go to a ford dealership before it runs out.

I spoke with the dealer and they told me that it's not a synchronized gear but I'm sceptical as I didn't see the problem before they changed the 3rd and 5th synchro's.

Until the shaft is fixed, your syncros will continue to go out.

Reverse does not have a synchro and reverse grinding is a common problem. There is not really a fix for it, you just have to deal with it.

yeah, you're right, forgot about that, but grinding means clutch replacement. and with the forward drive synchros going out, it's the throw-out shaft or bearing.

It shouldn't grind in any case.

Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it. Sounds like it's not a major issue, I can keep from grinding it by changing into a forward drive gear to sync it before putting in reverse. Thanks again.

it will be when your gears are toothless.

Makes it hard to move forward . . .

There doesn't appear to be any problem with the forward gears - shifts smoothly and without and grinding / notchiness. Reverse is the same once I sync it up by going into a forward gear first. Do you think that it will still cause undue wear to the clutch / box ? Thanks again for all the info.
