Sloppy Steering in a 97

I've got a 97 and when the motor is running there is play in the steering. Just about an inch or so but enough to drive you insane when on the highway. Just a total dead spot before the wheels react. Anyone know of an adjustment that can be made? I forgot to check it this morning but I think it's not noticeable when the car is not running. So it may be something in the power steering, not the gears. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rob

How many miles on the car?

Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice, making his countrymen work for nothing...Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar?Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just,so all went well with him. He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well...But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain,on shedding innocent blood and on oppression and extortion. Do you do a lot of highway driving?

If so the steering rack may be going out.

Other culprits are ball joints, etc . . .
