Why is there such a difference in v6 hp from pre-99 to 99+

Can a 96 V6 mustang go as fast as a 99+ V6? What is the difference between the two engines that makes one produce more HP? I'm not very knowledgable about cars yet.... hopefully will be sometime and i am wondering if my 96 could be like a 99+ or if i would have to buy a 99+ engine.

Of course you could get your car like the 99+, which is stock 210 HP.
Im not sure about the numbers on your car, but with bolt-ons you could reach that easily, it just depends on how much cash you want to spit out.

The heads and intake flow more air.

With a port and polish, the pre-99s have more capacity for hp, but the reliability is much better with 99+ blocks.

Look in the tech section for the rebuilders write up, it details everything.

P.S. the 99-04s make 190-196 hp depending on changes -while it's not at all difficult to get 210 hp out of them the OEM numbers are lower.

With some bargain shopping you can pick up the split port stuff for cheap, you will need heads, intakes and a spacer for the intakes to clear your fuel rail, and a tune. Some other stuff as well like 99+ spark plug wires (they are longer) and a throttle cable, and a tune. You can do the swap fairly easily if you have a manual, tools and some time.

It's pretty much the same differences as 96-98 GTs and 99-04 GTs. Heads/cam/intake changes.

They do. It's the NEW ones (4.0 liter) that have 210hp stock.

190-196 depending on the year.

When i was askin this question i was wondering if a fully upgraded pre99 v6 could go as fast as a 99+ v6. Like if you upgraded the heads and everything that was different would they eventually e equal or will the 99+ be superior no matter what?

if you have a 94-98 v6 and put the same things on it that I have on my 04 stock v6 (my heads and my split port intake manifold and my cam) you would have almost the same horsepower within 10 horses [I say that because of wear and tear on the engine]... However if you leave your cam on and just put the intake and heads on, you may have a little more horsepower than I do. [reason being is that the cam on the 94-98 is a little more aggressive.]

If you go to this website you will see that they say something a long the lines of what I just said and you will see how much the swap actually cost.

http://rpm-mustangs.com/cart/home.php?cat=322

For those that are like me, its only $720 USD... However, the actual horsepower that reaches the ground in the 99-04 especially the 3.9 liter v6's of 2004 are roughly about 3 to 5 hp more and about 5 lb of torque more. This is because the auto tranny is a little more efficient and the engine doesn't loose as much horsepower to thermal energy (heat) as does the older 3.8s from 94-01... I think in 02 they came out with the v6 having 193 hp.

Thank you alot. I thought that i might have to do a 99+ swap in order to achieve the same hp. but i think ill just go wit a split port and ported heads.

The basic kit at that site comes with everything i need and new heads. So does that mean if i want to get ported heads then i would have to get the 99+ ones right?

a fully upgraded one can go faster than a GT. Depends on your ability, time and budget. Look at Pinto's ride.
