What's your budget and goal?

your not going to see huge gains from a cam alone. Heads+cam+intakes is where the power is at. I would put a set of P&P heads on at the same time since you will have them off anyway. You can get a real good set of P&P heads for around $500. I would suggest getting a tune as well to get the most out of your new set up and that will take care of the timing aspect. Remember you will also need new valve springs with that cam as well.

your best bet is to know ahead of time what you're willing to spend so you can put together a plan.

What year GTs? it's not hard to beat pre-99 GTs, 99+ GTs will take more effort, 05+ will take even more.

If you just start buying parts without considering how they'll work together, you'll end up with a poor running, undependable car.

SO is your goal 225hp? 260? 300? 400?

I want to be able to beat 99+ GT's so around 280 HP or so... i would say around $2,000-$4,000 is what i want to spend, but i want to be able to beat them without using a power adder...

That's going to be tough NA using the 3.8L internal components.

Get a port and polish on your heads before you do the cam.

You can get by with 20 less hp to equal the performance of a GT since you weigh 200lbs+- less. IF you can keep a lot of junk out of the car.

It's not that difficult to get there but you should pick up the rotating assembly from a 4.2L V6 to get there the easiest. Crank, pistons, rods, etc.

So what do you think about the f-150 heads??? what does that cost... since i think it is a 4.2L.... it could save alot of work... will i see any power increase from just that??? also what year do i get it out of, and what do you think it would cost...for the 4.2L swap... or upgrade however you have to do it

THe block and heads are the same. The only difference is the intake and the rotating assembly (at least on the 01+ engines)

You could just pick up a low mileage block with the rotating assembly already assembled, and throw on the Mustang heads, intake, etc.

But the Mustang has some pretty trick internal parts that I don't think the 4.2L has, like heftier main caps, and windage tray, etc. (I could be totally wrong)

The cost will depend on how much of the work you do yourself. AND labor rates vary so much from place to place, it'd be better if you just called around and got some estimates . ..
