How do I get this back together? It seams that the front, with the ball and spring, will not go down far enough for the shaft to go into the block.

The top of my automatic shifter has the decor on it slowly starting to lift and peel. I know it's silly and such a small issue, but it bugs me. Is there a replacement for this anyone knows about, besides changing the whole shifter knob?
