02 Auto Tranny Problems

I just joined here and have a serious problem that needs some guidance and advice. I bought this car in Aug 04' and it was used. this past summer i put on a K&N FIPK, Dragon Performance 75mm TB and Plenum, also a SLP cat-back loudmouth II exhaust system. i plan on doing BBK headers and x-pipe this summer if i'm lucky. Anyways this past saturday i'm getting on the expressway and i punch it (o/d off). My car hits 4000 RPM's and drops to 2000. I figured something was wrong. I got off at the nearest exit and drove the car home. i noticed that when i was crusing at like thirty my rpms normally are at 1500-1750 this time they were at 2700 and i really wasn't moving. Yet when i punched it though i could easily hit 80-100mph. My mechanic drove the car and seems to think i burned out my third gear clutch. Which means a tranny rebuild or a whole new tranny all together. either way a minimum of $1,500.

My questions to all of you is:

Do i need a new trans?

Is my mechanic right?

Where can i get a trans that can take a beating but won't break my bank?

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks in advance,
Smoker

sounds like it was sliping to me....id just rebuild your tranny but id add extra clutch plates and a trannsgo shift kit....the kit has a few cool mods like the extra clutchs and mine came with some teflon seals for the pump i think, anyway if you do a few mods like these it will be a great street tranny....i love mine, it will grab a ton of 2nd all day long!!!
So how much do you think this might cost? Will a rebuit tranny with better clutches be able to withstand a decent beating because i love to show this car off. I am a pedal to the metal kind of guy.

Thank you for helping me out. I'm pulling my hair out over this. i mean the car only has 31,562 miles on it.
theres a rebuild kit on e-bay right now for like $50 its a ford kit and its what i used to rebuild mine, nothin fancy i just had to go back to ford to order a few more clutch plates to add more. it will hold up to 400hp at least. im also using a stand alone tranny computer (i skiped all the chips) that thing is amazing!!

If you're going to hammer an auto frequently it would be an excellent idea to put a good plate type tranny cooler on the car. Do the "Jerry mod" while the trans is apart. When the tranny is rebuilt, be sure to flush the cooler in the radiator and the lines before you hook up the new tranny!

I second that. Do not do the "nogoshift kit" Toomany problems with transgo, a better and more reliable do ityourself shift kit is the jmod.
I would take it to another mechanic that you trust and have him test drive it and actually look at it. he can give you a better diagnosis of the issue than us who can't drive it or look at it.

if you are also looking into BBK Longtubes, might want to switch brands as BBK LT's do not work with the aode in the GT's.

Good luck with the issue.
Of what you tell us it seams to me as if the ECM (ECU) would have detected a problem and gone into a "save" mode with the tranny.

I never had a stang with an auto, but you might want to do a simple test real quick:
Hook the battery off for about 20 minutes (head-light switch on) and try the whole thing again. This procedure will reset the ECU.

just give it a shot, you cant loose on that.
I'd say that sounds baout right on your 3rd gear clutches. If you check the codes you will probably find a 2-3 shift error. I know a guy in indianapolis who can fix that transmission right for you.

Thanks a lot guys for all the help. I really aprreciate it!! I found a guy near me who builds transmissions for a show on the discovery channel maybe you guys have heard of it "American Hot Rod". Anyways the name of the place is Roadmaster Transmission. They are going to Remanufacture my trans not rebuild. It will be rated for 450hp easily. its gonaa cost me about 2K but i work with three other people who drive mustangs and rave about their work so i'm set.

Thanks again to all of you who helped.
