Does this sound mostly come from the front of the engine? Kind of sounds like timing chains rattling around with no tension on them. Or if it is coming from the top of the motor, perhaps lash adjusters going bad not pumping up.

I'll have to check that tomorrow. I found out earlier that one of the belt rotaters at the bottom spins but then stops. I dont know if that leads to a bigger problem. I'll reply back tomorrow with the timing chain!

I'm guessing V6 Premium car? only by the gauges. the timing chains on the 4.0 are on the rear of the engine, towards the firewall. sounds like timing is really sloppy. what belt rotator? are you referencing? 117k miles isn't that bad if taken care of. maintenance? need more info.

Timing chains are at the rear of the engine! Man that is not going to be easy to fix. Hope that is not the issue here.
