When you turn the key on the warning lights are supposed to come on. If the key is on, but the motor isn't running, you don't have any oil pressure and the generator isn't charging. That's exactly the sort of thing that the warning lights are supposed to let you know. Once you start the motor, the oil pressure light should go out almost immediately. The generator light sometimes takes a bit longer, depending on the condition of your battery.
