Hey all –
New guy hear. I have been reading the forums for a while now and was hoping to tap into some of the great knowledge and advise from all the great members of AFM. After about 20 years on the sideline I am ready to jump in.

I am about to pull the trigger on on a 65 coupe I recently found.

I was hoping to get some feedback on the price to make sure I am, lookig at a fair deal for all parties involved.

The seller is asking 6,000 for a 1965 coupe. Here are all the details I have.

1965 Ford Mustang Coupe
Southern California car with very minimal rust (just a few small spots)
Engine code T - I6 200 CID 1V
45K on original rebuilt engine
Trany was refreshed/gone over during engine rebuild
New interior – seats, floor and headliner
New radiator at engine rebuild
3 speed – manual
New clutch and pressure plate
New ignition switch
New brakes – drums, shoes and cylinders
Added electronic ignition
Head redone w/ hard seats
New fuel and air filter
New shocks
Original carb rebuilt about 1 year ago
All new rubber window seals
New muffler - end to end
Was repainted red, original was black
The car seems real tight and ran smooth on the test drive.

I am not lookig for something to restore to original. Just looking to continue to add/upgrade and enjoy the ride.

Honestly I'd say that's a reasonable price, I paid 6 for mine and it sounds like the same situation when I bought it 4 years back, however mine was also in desperate need of a paint job and some body work lol. I certainly wouldn't pay anything over 6 for it, in my opinion I'd def try talking him down closer to 5 though. With the rebuilt motor and tranny as well as the interior work I'd say it's well worth the money.

Then again I'm still a rookie here, so maybe wait for the made members opinions since they are a lot wiser than I am with this kind of stuff lol

coupe302... thanks for the welcome and advise. Not sure there is any flexability in the price but won't know for sure till I am resdy to make an offer. Will probably offer 5K and end up somewhere in-between.

There really isn't much to do to the car beside overall ongoing maintenence at this time, petty much driver ready....

It's probably a fair enough price, would be more helpful to see pictures. Something I'd do if you were able is run your flat hand along the doors, fenders, quarters, revealing built up spots (ie from body filler) or low spots (dents and dings). Check out the rain gutters on the windows to see if the sealer is cracked and if you can see any rot beneath, check out the frame rails and the floor pans from underneath, basically try to find as much wrong with the car as you can. Maybe ask if you can pour some water in through the cowl to see if it leaks onto the floor boards at all.

Bring $5500 cash with you, put $5000 in his face. It is proven psychology that humans respond to cash. If he thinks it's too low, ask what he'd want and pull out more.

6K sounds reasonable for that car. Looks like a lot was replaced or rebuilt and it seems to run and drive well from what you said. Won't need much right away and would be a good platform for upgrades if you chose to go that way.

Thanks for feedback everybody. I appriciate the responses. I did the hand test and wasn’t able to find any bumps or depressions. According to the seller it has never been in an accident. After careful inspection I tend to believe him.

I am a bit nervous about buying it as I am concerned that these old cars turn out to be money pits. Not from a mod and ugrade perspective but from a keep it maintained and running.
Does this seem to be the case or are they pretty solid once the basics are in place? I had to dump the boat because it was a never ending money hole.

I am pretty handy but don’t hve much car expeience beyond doing oil changes, and some other basics (plugs, filters, etc...)

I wouldn't pay 6k for a inline 6 car unless everything on it was in amazing shape and could be a show car tomorrow.If you want to v8 swap it later its cheaper to buy a v8 car from the start.

You need to look at it this way. That is a 46 year old car. Unless every single part on the car has been replaced with brand new, parts will be worn, or are going to wear, and will need to be replaced. Metal will rust and rot. While some cars and owners have better luck than others, you should go in expecting it to be a money pit, or expect to be constantly having to replace or fix something, whether it be big or small. As for me, owning a sweet looking old car is only half the fun; I also enjoy the maintenance and fixing things.

But after you have fixed something once, you will know how to do it. (the 2nd time if need be, to get it right) :yup: But yeah, they do take some of your $$ to keep em running.

Are there inherit issues with the I-6 or are you speaking purely from an upgrade/mod perspective?

I could find a V8 and therefore save some coin on the conversion but there might be a lot of other stuff that needs work too (body, interior, etc…) which would off set the savings.

Just part of owning an awesome classic. Time and money are always in short supply but that is life.
