It's a two man job. Don't use silicone as a sealant. Use the sealant that's specifically made for automotive windows. It comes in tubes like household caulking. The gasket is placed around the glass first and a length of cord is placed inside of the portion that meets the metal flange on the car. Sealant is placed in the inner and outer grooves of the gasket before installation. One person has to hold the glass in position from the outside and the other pulls on the cord which lifts up on the gasket so that it will seat over the metal flange. There's the procedure listed on line, I'm pretty sure. From my personal experience this can be a messy job. I had sealant all over the place. Next time, I'm taking the glass and gasket to a shop that's familiar with this old style of glass installation. For what is charged to do the job, it would be well worth it. If it leaks, it's theirs to correct. If you are either doing the job yourself or taking it to a shop, make sure that the metal flange where the gasket sits, is well prepped and clean to avoid corrosion, is straight and without any sharp edges that can cut the gasket.
