1965 Mustang. having problems with reverse

665 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  PJ Smalls
Have a 65 and am having some problems backing up even when i'm on fairly level ground. If my tires roll even slightly forward, when I let the clutch out there's a loud bang and it won't go anywhere. Going forward on an uphill slope is no problem, I just can't back up if I'm headed downhill. Please help, thanks.

Hello.:) I would check and see if the reverse shift rod on the transmission is going all the way over. It sounds like you are describing a car that is jumping out of gear. If that isn't the problem, then you will have to pull the transmission and go inside it. Good luck.:)
Thanks Veronica, I believe it's probably the synchros that are bad on it. I'm just planning on driving it until next winter then dropping the tranny out and see what's going on.
