Replacing the steering wheel after installing new turn signal switch. When I put the wheel in place, there is a 1/2" gap between the base of the wheel and the top of the column. The nut gets very tight and I'm afraid I'll break the wheel by over tightening.
There is a spring between the wheel and column bearing.

Should the wheel tighten down easily so that there is no gap?

When you put the steering wheel back on, how much thread is sticking up (of the steering shaft)?

If you have enough thread to completely tighten the nut and about 1/16" above the nut, then you can loosen the column and pull it out (towards you) a little to close the gap.

Be careful to check the column bearing and make sure everything is in line first; also, make sure your column isn't TOO close to the wheel; I did this and somehow got a short through my headlight switch......had I not heard the clicking of the headlight switch, I probably would have burned my car down.

Veronica, any advice?

Michael
