my 65 mustang has a c4. It has been refusing to shift into 3rd. I have replaced the modulator valve. I am pulling 10" of mercury vacuum at idle and it reduces to around 5 with some rpm. I can not be sure how many rpm i am turning right now because i have no tach connected. today i was shifting it manually to get it warmed up for a gumout treatment prior to flushing and replacing the filter and it shifted to 3rd gear from the second shifter position. Is this normal. my 71 mustang was not this way at all. any ideas?

maybe your linkage is not adjusted right, and you never actually get down to 1st when the shifter is all the way down? Those things get alot of play after 30 yrs if they arent tightened and freshened up.

i am 99% sure it is going into low by the whine coming from the transmission. it shifts smoothly from there to second both manually and when in the shift position next to neutrol. The shift seems tight. your right about the adjustment fromt here though. i can not be sure it is actually in the 3rd position at this point.

The 1965 C4 is a "Green Dot" transmission. you have a "dual range" C4.
In the low position it will start in low and stay there; in the next position it will start in 2nd and shift to high; in the position next to neutral it will start in low and shift 2 - and high. (I might have the last two reversed - it has been a while) there is no manual second gear and in one position it will not start in low so it only shifts once.
You have to go to a 66 C4 before you get the "Select Shift" transmission like your 71.

thank you for the info

I want to thank everyone for saying hello and also for the information. This is the first internet anything I have joined and am still learning the different areas of the forum.
I drove it some last night. As long as I didn't give it much gas it went in to 3rd from the green dot position on the shifter (at about 15mph). If I gave it any gas it jumped out and would not go back or never made it to 3rd even when I let off.

Thanks PaulS

thank you PaulS. i am a 'little' slow. Eventually, i usually catch on. your post made me go searching the web. i looked up dual range c4 and found the answer that made it click for me. the 65-66 c4's had fords new invention in them. the first position past neutral was for snow asnd ice and kept the transmission out of 3rd gear. the normal shifter position to drive in is the second position past neutral (green dot). i am still not positive that mine is shifting correctly. the shift to 3rd is very soft at low speeds and i do not feel it at all when i am giving it the gas. it is nothing like my 71 was. thanks again.

Makes sure the pin is still in the transmission modulation valve. I changed mine and lost the pin not knowing there was one and it shifted all funny and not at all at times....found pin and reinserted...good to go....also there are a couple different modulator valves with different shift points.....I think green ended up being the best performance for me.

On the 65 - 66 C4s you want to use the yellow stripe with a 1 3/4" pin for strong shifts. If you find it shifts too late then take a 1/16" off the rod.

Paul, I couldn't find a yellow. All the parts stores around here had a unheard of green stripe or red. Tried it and it works great....could be just a manufactures difference. Had yellow in it before change. I think I have a '70s c-4 anyway. Turned in a '66 core but got back a slightly different one from parts store. I know this because '66 had a screw in valve and this one has a pushin.
