The engine does not sit level so exactly where and to what are you calling the 'bottom of the intake'? The intake manifold has a heat shield in the middle underneath - are you taking about from the bottom of the heat shield? From the bottom front of the manifold? The bottom rear?? You also can't get to any of these points to measure on a manifold that is bolted to an engine.
From the cast iron ring that surrounds the heater hose elbow that screws into a 289 (2V) manifold it is 7.5" to the top, front of the stock, blue air cleaner. From there to the bottom of the intake manifold, at the front, is another 2 3/4". The further back along the manifold you measure that number will get larger since the manifold is tapered so that the carb is somewhat level when installed in a car.
