Do you have any info on the rebuild? Could a set of straight cut timing gears have been installed?
1966 Mustang 289 Automatic Engine Noise Similar to SuperCharger
Hey guys, first post in what I'm sure will be an ongoing relationship.
I recently picked up a 1 owner 66 289 Mustang in premo shape.
Shes a bit ugly at the moment but that will change as time goes by.
The 289 has a rebuild with about 15k on it. Its been sitting for a couple of years only being started on occasion.
My first portion of this project is figuring out where an engine whine is coming from.
This whine sounds like a supercharger or timing gears and increases/decreases with throttle. Ive pulled every belt to eliminate the possibility of Alternator, power steering, smog pump, and AC. The whine stays. I can not tell exactly where its coming from but it really sounds like its in the area of the crank or torque converter. This thing runs and shifts great so I'm thinking maybe the water pump is projecting the sound. Any ideas?

Gears instead of a timing chain will make the whine you describe.
No timing gears. Could this sound be coming from the Tranny? Its rather strange and as the video shows it is not there on idle but as soon as I accelerate it appears and increases/decreases with RPM. The one thing I can say is it's consistant.
If that isn't a gear drive timing set then I would start by checking the fluid level of the transmission with the engine idling in Park. The pump can make that noise if it is worn or if the outer gear is installed backwards. If the filter is plugged it can cause a similar noise. Service the transmission using a new filter/strainer and type "F" fluid.

Also when I pulled the fan I could get a much better feel for where the noise was coming from and it really appeared to be in the area of the bell housing.
Not being a transmission expert, Where is the pump located and if its bad does that mean I need a tranny rebuild?
What I dont understand but as noted I'm no expert, is the car drives and shifts quite well. Wouldnt a clogged filter or bad pump affect this?
