1966 Mustang 289. How do I change the spark plugs

10794 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  mccance
I have a 1966 Mustang Coupe with a 289. Back in the day when I had a straight six it was no issue changing the spark plugs. Now I have a 289 with headers and a dress kit. Is there any way to change the spark plugs with out removing everything. There just isnt enough space to squeeze between with tools.
Any suggestions like going under the car... Something or anything will be helpful for a less then knowledgable D.Y.I'er

Have you tried using a swivel joint or swivel socket? Maybe with the applicable length extensions?
I have those new craftsman cresant wrench, and I still cant get in there.
Get yourself a stubby ratchet and a palm ratchet.... works for me

You need to use a socket and ratchet to remove spark plugs. If you get a plug socket it will have a hex on the end that you can put a box end wrench on in tight places. I have always been able to get to mine with a socket, extension and an impact swivel joint.

it is a bit tight but this is what I do as well. with the spark plug socket and a wrench you can get in there. only takes a quarter turn or so and then you can turn the socket with your fingers to get it the rest of the way off.
