1966 Mustang Gear Select-Goes to neutral, drive, 2nd & low, but not reverse or park

I need to figure out how to fix the gear selection. In the last day or so I have been unable to select anything but drive or neutral. When I push the gear select forward towards park, it goes into neutral and is all the way forward. I think this is just a linkage issue, but I'm not exactly sure where to start to fix it.

Is this something I need to fix at the gear select? Is this fixed from underneath the car where the linkage goes into the transmission?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It could be a binding shifter, linkage binding or something like the band strut binding inside the transmission on the linkage.
Look over the easy stuff first and if that all looks OK then you are going to have to drop the pan and valve body to see what is binding - my bet is that the band strut fell and is binding the internal linkage. This happens when the band adjustments are not made for years and it gets sloppy enough to fall out.
Gear shifting issues

I've talked to other places here in town and that seemed to be the issue. About a week ago it stopped shifting into Neutral. It had already stopped going into park, but now without going into neutral, I can't get it to start. I MUST get it fixed now. I don't think I have the expertise to pull the cover and drop the valves to do it myself. I've never done anything on transmissions before, and this seems like a bad project to pick for a first attempt.

I think you're right. Go to a trusted transmission shop -- you'll get off cheaper and it will be done right.
its just the shift linkage that needs to be adjusted. the nut has come loose you dont have a tranny problem

I agree it is probably a loose nut on the linkage, always look at all of the simple things first!
It sounds like either a nut is loose, or the little clip holding the linkage together may have gone. Also, your transmission isn't set up like this "Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Second, Low" It is set up like this.

Park
Reverse
Neutral
White Dot-2nd drive, starts car in second and shifts to high
White Circle & Green Dot-starts car in first, shifts to second & high
Low
Problem was the transmission

In an effort to provide some resolution to this thread, I am writing back.

I did have my car towed to a transmission shop recommended by a trusted friend. The transmission itself was shot. It was not a linkage issue. I decided to sell the entire car and buy something different. It was time to get a car that I could take kids in.

Oh, no! Does that mean you are Mustang free? I don't know how old you are but was this a decision that you may regret in the near future?

I know, in a certain sense a Mustang is just another car that cost's money to fix and repair especially if you are having to use it as a daily driver. And they can be a sacrifice to securely store if it is just a plaything. But there could come a day that you wished you still had it for a hobby or just the mystique.

Even if you're not, I will be sorry for you that you had to divest yourself of it!
