Hello,

I just got a 1966 inline 6(200) with a 3 speed auto trans. It runs well but I noticed that in D it engages in 2nd gear to 3rd and not 1st upon take off. So today did a test. Dropped to 1st manually then to 2nd then to D. Everything worked fine but in normal drive there is no indication it wants to drop to 1st upon a new takeoff. No indications of slippage or any noise. The car is very quiet and smooth shifting.. Any ideas why this is happening??? Linkage off?? Im not too familiar with transmissions

Thanks,

Kyle

If you put it in the position you are refering to as 2nd, you should get the 1st, 2nd & 3rd shifts.

Sorry if I confused you. When I start the car and put it in drive, the car is in 2nd gear not 1st. If I manually move the shifter to 1, I have the gear. It's like I have a vintage half manual half automatic. Thanks for your input.

If it has the green dot next to D (drive) its design that way, takes off in 2nd and shift to 3rd. Later C4 transmission shift from first through 3rd gear.
