Hello all, new member here just thought I would say Hi. Received my first mustang from my mom and step dad for my birthday. Now all I have to do is get to work on it. It is a 1966 coupe with a straight six. Wish it was a v8 but that can be changed. Going to need a floor pan and right and left rear panels. Just have to figure out where to start first.

Thats a awesome gift, what plans do you have for the car?

That said, I'd leave it a straight 6, to make it V8 worthy is a long project and you gain some power for less gas milage, and in current times mpg sounds just as good as a v8.

My project 65 needed, 2 new fenders, new deck lid and hood, with entire front clip replaced (though i found a donor original car to keep it that way) new radiator, some valve seals waterpump, quick rustol undercoating the bare metal and its my daily driver after 2 months and 3000 dollars in it entirely.
Working on a new paintjob now.

What else do you need to repair/fix on the car? have you double checked the inner workings or has it been restored before?

To my knowledge it hasn't been restored before. It has been parked for last 3 years. It was just delivered to my house today and I haven't had time to really look it over yet. Water pump is missing and there are some spots that look like rust has bubbled the paint on the bottom of the right door and front fender. From what I can tell it has been repainted once. It looks like it will be a long over hall of the car. May be more than what I want to get into.

Welcome to AFM! Start by checking out our Classic Talk and Tech sections. There's a lot of incredible info on those areas. Also, consider keeping the six cylinder. Those 200's are awesome engines and you can really warm them up and have fun!

Thanks I will check out the Classic talk and Tech solutions. I will keep the 6 cylinder that is in it its the original engine and looks pretty clean. Plus I get more advise to keep it a 6 cylinder than to change it out.

The car is already in a good shape, I would spend the money to get the thing running, feel it out and work from there.

I bought my 64.5 from a family friend for 1800.

It ran. (but the thing was in a front end and rear end accident)

Needed to install radiator/Waterpump and all in between, buy 2 fenders I found originals for sale close by.

Bought a 66' front end clip , bumpers arms grill headlights buckets doors complete, and new hood/Trunklid/rear bumper.

After all that fixed all the body work and had the damn thing running, after replacing all 8 valve seals and a quick tuneup and (soon to be) paint job, I've invested about 3000 into it total and never been happier.

Theres always bugs to workout, like my auto shifter needed bushing kits to keep it in park, or the carb needed to be professionally rebuilt or a exhaust leak that cause a loud pop when coming off a high rev. Or finding the vent windows frames are broken and needing to replace them to get your windows to roll up right.

But driving to and from work getting thumbs up and watching people stare is in itself a reward.

Total after all the work I listed took about 2-3 months to complete the car.

I think you'll be happy with the six. Unless you can source and do all the work yourself it can be an expensive venture to do a V8 swap. Just add to the stable and get a V8 later! Lol.

You have a pretty straight looking car so get a plan and go from there. Keep us posted and enjoy!
