1966 Mustang Possible Starter Issue

In the past I have had some issues with my ignition system. Mostly just the starter solenoid.

Recently when I go to turn on my car the starter will get stuck. Not the solenoid, but the starter itself. It makes a very ugly clicking noise. Either it goes away after about 15 seconds or I have to turn it off and turn it back on for it to go away. If I let it go away on its own everything is fine as I'm driving. If I turn the car off and on to make it go away, it seems like the starter kicks on again between 20 to 35 mph.

I've been all over the car and it seems that that's what it is to me?

Does anyone have an input? Or maybe a way to check if it is the starter? Can it also be a wiring issue?

Thanks,
Gus

Hello. :) This isn't going to be a problem with the starter itself. In order for the starter to do anything, it has to be getting power from the starter solenoid. When the key is not in the start position, the starter isn't supposed to be getting any power. If it is getting power, then some other component is responsible for that. Probably either the starter solenoid, or the ignition switch. :)

I agree with Veronica. When you say it "kicks on again between 20 to 35 mph" that bothers me. Does it do it every time? Is it only speed or time related? How heavy is your key ring? Is the road you use very bumpy? How old are the solenoid and ignition switch?

I would first look at all the wiring from the ignition switch all the way to the starter. You need to eliminate any weird wiring issues. If OK, then replace the switch. You can get them at many local parts stores. The weight of the keys bouncing in the lock could be just enough to effect bad contacts. Next replace the solenoid. I would do one at a time so you know what fixed it, then please tell us.

Its pretty much every time between 20 to 35 mph. Ocasionally you hear a couple clicks at 45 mph. I recently replaced both my solenoid and ignition switch. I had to go through 3 solenoids to find one that wouldn't get stuck. Since I am still having issues can this most likely be a wiring issue??

Thanks,

the clicking might be a bad bendix not holding the gear properly retracted. i had this problem before several times. the first time drove me nuts. if would click/rattle under hard acceleration but go away under steady speed. i would pull the starter and look at that. you may have more than one problem though.

Had some what of the same issue my cure was to make sure I didnt pull off the bottom nuts on the center two posts on a four post solenoid. Apperantlly if they fall in and contact or spin at all it ruins the solenoid. Just something to check. As for grinding and clunking I have nothing.
