I just rebuilt and reinstalled a 289 into my 1966 convertible with a C-4 transmission. When I start the engine there's a loud clicking noise that appears to be comming from the starter. I pulled off the lower cover of the flywheel and it appears that a flywheel counter weight is hitting either the cover or the starter....can't tell. Anyone ever encountered this before?

When you mated the torque converter and flywheel together, did you make sure the torque converter drain plugs lined up properly with the larger holes in the flywheel? If not, the plugs end up behind the flywheel pushing it towards the engine. When you had the cover off and rotated the engine, do you remember seeing the drain plugs?

Thanks the problem turned out to be a warped flywheel likely due to it being installed incorrectly, as you suggested, in the 1st place. A new one cured the problem. Thanks
