1966 Mustang Starter Relay Problem?

4266 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  The Greek
I backed my car out of my garage to put some things away, went to restart the car and now only get a semi loud ticking sound on the starter relay when I turn the key on to start. I've swapped out the battery and the starter relay to no avail. Any ideas, I'm at a loss. If it matters, it's a 289. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the site,it sounds like a bad connection.
Hello.:) :welcome Yup. I think that I would start by cleaning up both ends of both battery cables. :)
Check to see if the solenoid is transfering power to the starter when it's energized. If the connections are good and no power, it's a bad solenoid.

If it's transfering power to the starter and the connection there is good and the starter's housing is making good contact with the engine block (the starter gets its ground through its housing), the starter is suspect.
