How can I tell what the rotation is suppose to be? It goes clockwise now and its using serpetine belts and stock pulley. I haven't had to change anything with the pulley it just bolted right up and it has ribs in it for the belt. But since I replaced the water pump using the 84 lincoln year I don't know what the rotation is? And its warming up to 210 - 220 and staying steady when warm but want it cooler like 190d. Before I change the thermostat I just wanted to make sure its not overheating?

The original rotation pumps have the lower radiator hose connection on the passenger side. The reverse rotation pumps have the hose connection on the driver's side of the pump.

Some of the early serpentine setups were not reverse rotation. The water pump pulleys that have the grooves are for original rotation and the smooth pulleys are for reverse rotation.

Is there a way to tell from the bolt pattern? I had a smooth pulley that I got from the bone yard but the holes were to not lining up and in was farther out so it didn't line up with the balancer or alternator. But the pulley that I found later with the grooves had lined up and the holes were correct.

Does that mean it goes in the clockwise rotation? Thanks for your help.

As far as I've experienced, the grooved pulleys all rotate clockwise and the smooth ones rotate counter-clockwise as viewed when looking at the front of the engine.

The water pump is the key to whether it needs to be driven clockwise, or reverse. On which side of the water pump is the fitting for your lower radiator hose?

There are ways to set your 66 up either way with a serpentine belt...

The lower radiator hose is on the driverside. The old pump had the pulley broken off and I don't know whether it was smooth or not. The pulley I got for it was from a bone yard and it seemed to be the best fit for it.
ETA: And it was grooved.

the 80's full sizes/mid got clockwise water pumps, and the outlet was on the dr side.

yours is clockwise
I learned something!

I'm sorry... I did not know that the 80's cars had changed the side of the lower hose connection, but still retained the clockwise rotation. You can't determine the rotation by the location of the hose!

As far as I know, the rule that a smooth pulley is CCW and a grooved pulley is CW still holds true...

Unfortunately, this forum will not allow me to annotate the incorrect post.

Indeed, as the 80's vics and lincolns received a grooved pulley and they were clockwise.

the 80's clockwise waterpumps make a great swap for the fox guys who want to eliminate their ac and p/s pump and smog pump and still have the outlet on the dr side. Unfortunately though, the length isn't the exact same as the vintage clockwise pumps, so some fiddling with accessory pulley's may be necessary (or just grab the correct ones off that car)...however I know for sure, and possibly all of them? but the vics used a dual serpentine pulley setup, so the crank pulley has two slots for two belts...so again, it would prob be necessary to use a fox single crank pulley, and use spacers to get everything lined up right.

didn't see a fan shroud...that will make a massive difference at idle.

also, that's not an autozone radiator is it?? Search my name...if it's an autozone radiator, that's your problem. They're wortheless and won't hold temps.

compare it to the one in the picture below...the one on the right is an autozone unit with small tubes...two rows.

I replaced it with the 2 row on the left with giant 1" tubes and it fixed everything

just be certain you get a radiator that has the inlet on the side that you need it.

3/4 of an inch is still huge compared to autozone crap
