I need some assistance in determining what type of windshield washer pump and wiring harness I need for my June 66, San Jose coupe.
1. My assumption is that if I have two speed wipers, I need the two speed pump? and I do have the two-speed wipers.
2. The pump that was in the car, part # C2AB-17664-A, is the three bolt pump. Most online vendors, the three bolt pump is single speed and the pictures of the two speed pump have two wires going to it (which is not what I have).
3. My wiring harness has a male/female plug on one end and at the other end both connections have broken off. One of the connections was a plug that went in to the top of the pump (it was still in the pump).

So what I am asking for is confirmation that I need to find a two-speed, three bolt pump and wiring harness? Any suggested vendors would be helpful (I usually go to cjponyparts but they do not list a 2-speed, three bolt pump).

1966 washer pump

Hi, It sounds like someone might have put a one speed wiper pump in. If it is silver U shaped housing that is a one speed unit. A 2 speed unit will be round shaped with a metal strap like with two mounting holes. To mount to the inner fender. First make sure that you indeed have a two speed set up. Look under the dash. If the wiper motor has a wiring harness coming out of it. It is a 2 speed. If it has a plug in to the motor it is a One speed motor. Hope this helps. Good luck!
 
Maybe a dumb question but just because the windshield wipers are two speed, why would that matter on the windshield washer pump? Why would it need to ever run at more than one speed. It just squirts a couple of streams of water.

You would need to ask Ford why they used two types of pumps. I do not know the reason for that. But the two are different and use different wiring harnesses as well. Plus different switches also. I am talking the right way. Not a Micky Mouse way to get it to work.
 
Also if I might add that 2 speed pumps at one time were hard to find, also on the high side, price wise. The one speed pumps were never hard to come by.

Thanks for the responses and I "think" that I now know what happened. At some point the 2-speed was replaced with the 1-speed and the connectors on the wiring harness were replaced. The wiring harness is/was correct for the 66, 2-speed. The PO must have had a big tree in his yard.... Probably about the same time he used extension cord to help fabricate his harness for trailer lights....
 
Hello. :) The two-speed pump itself doesn't operate at two different speeds. It's the pump that works with the two-speed wiper motor. If the car has the two-speed wipers, the squirter pump's ground is at the wiper motor. That's why there are two wires. One brings power to the pump, the other is the ground wire that goes back to the wiper motor.On the single speed wiper system, the pump grounds at one of the mounting screws of the pump itself, so, it only has one wire going to it. :)
 
I just got a washer pump from California Mustang, wired like the one Veronica describes with the ground at the pump. However, the one in my '66 with two-speed wipers has two leads, with the ground at the wiper motor. Can't I just connect the pump ground to that wire to get it to work? Normally I'd try it to see, but the distributor is out of the car and I don't even want to put the key in the ignition until I get its replacement in, which won't happen before a week or so. Wondering if I need to return the pump and order a different one. Thanks.
 
Hello. :) You can use the the wiring that you have, but, there is no ground wire coming out of the pump, so, you would have to rig up a wire from the little brass thingy on the mounting screw that grounds the pump to the inner fender. It would be much easier, and look a lot better, to just unplug the the two-wire harness that you have at the firewall, and run one wire from the hot side of the connector to the plug-in connector on the pump. It's a spade fitting at the pump and a bullet connector at the firewall. Just plug the wire into the firewall connector and turn on the pump. If it comes on, cool. If not, plug the wire into the other side of the firewall connector. :)
 
Thanks for your prompt reply, and sound advice as always, Veronica. Will try this. I sent the question to California Mustang this morning, in as much as I need to return the wiper knob I ordered. I must have been asleep at the wheel when I placed the order, since I intended to order the switch, not the knob. Not only that, the knob I ordered is for a later model, not my '66. I'm doing my shotgun approach here. The pump does indeed not work when I hook it to 12 vdc. I haven't checked the switch itself, but I'm not getting any voltage at the pump connectors. But I've already had to replace the headlight and ignitions switches, and replace the fuse block.
 
Hi again. :) If the pump does not work when you run power straight to it, there are only two things that can cause that result. Either the pump is bad, or, you have a bad ground. :)
