Hi,

I recently replaced the 2 worm bearings and sector seal on my steering box. I did the adjustment (as per stangersite.com) whilst the box was off the car. After mounting the steering box and installing the pitman arm I notcied some free play on the pitman arm when it was moved away from the straight adhead poistion. Is this normal?? however when brought beak to straight ahead poistion the free play goes away.

PLease advise

The mesh is tighter in the center position to compensate for wear. The teeth are meshing in the center position most of time, as we are driving in a straight line most of the time.

As long as the free play isn't excessive beyond the center, you should be OK.

does your car have manual or power steering? In my 1968 coupe i replaced the rag joint and the steering box, and my steering is nice and tight. And do you have the original steering box? I replaced my original 19:1 with a rebuilt 16:1 for even better steering. If it is not to serious i would not be worried about it, but personaly i hate loose steering.
