My fuel gauge seems to be faulty. After a fill up, the needle goes reads full, but after only a few miles of driving it reads 1/4 tank. At first we thought it was a leak but upon filling it up only six gallons topped her off.

Over the summer, I let the car sit with saran wrap zip tied over the tank inlet on the trunk floor while I did some body work on the tail light panel and some clutch and brake work. I started the car probably 10-15 times while doing the repair work and drove it maybe 4 miles. This left the gauge reading a 1/8 of a tank.

Has anyone had a problem like this/ know what the problem is and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Tim

It sounds like the sending unit has gone bad, you could drop the tank, and look it over, but the only fix is to replace it. You can use some resistors to emulate the sending unit to check the gauge, but I've forgotten the values, a shop manual might have this info. Good Luck.
